Mucking and hauling

Apollo Gold Corporation - Diamond Hill mine (U.S.A)

Primary Mining Method

Sub-Level Longhole retreat.
Information

The broken ore is generally mucked out of a stope until the brow is open. More rock is then blasted in order to keep the stope full. If the stope is not straight, it is mucked out completely before blasting over the curve in order to ease the remote mucking. The final mucking of each stope is done with a remote scooptram. The scooptram operator generally dumps directly into trucks but occasionally he dumps into the remuck bay.

MUCKING-HAULING EQUIPMENT

  • Tamrock 6-yard scooptram. Generally, one single scooptram for 3 trucks.
  • MTI trucks (two 26 tons units and three 18 tons units).

Coeur Silver Valley Inc. - Galena Mine (U.S.A)

Primary Mining Method

Cut-and-Fill mining method.
Information

The broken ore is either scraped or mucked with a front end self loader, Cavo 320, in a chute built along the service raise. The ore is then loaded directly into mine cars with an hydraulic controlled chute.

EQUIPMENT

  • Scraper
  • Cavo 320, front end self loader
  • Locomotive, Greenberg 5 tons
  • Mine cars of 3.5 and 4 tons. Approximately 5 cars per locomotive.

Echo Bay Minerals Co.- K-2 Mine (U.S.A)

Primary Mining Method

Sub-Level Longhole stoping.
Information

The mucking is done by retreating with remote controlled equipment. After a blast, the stope is completely mucked prior to another blast. This prevents the ore to be lost in the event of wall failure.

The scooptram dumps the ore directly into trucks.

EQUIPMENT

  • 6-yard remote control scooptrams (2 units)
  • 3-yard remote control scooptram
  • 26 t trucks

To operate the scooptrams, the worker is on a concrete slab.

Secondary Mining Method

Longhole transverse.

Gold Fields Ltd - Kloof Mine (South Africa)

Primary Mining Method

Sequential grid down dip.
Information

In stopes, scrapers and high-pressure hoses are used to clean the floor. The ore is then conveyed to raises containing an ore chute at the bottom, where the ore is loaded directly into mine cars. A drawpoint permits access as well as the ore loading with a mucking machine at the base of the stope, and also for the development of initial raise.

Primary Mining Method

Long-hole bench stoping with backfill.
Information

All the ore is hauled to the surface via the decline.

Hecla Mining Company - Lucky Friday mine (U.S.A)

Primary Mining Method

Overhand cut-and-fill.
Information

The face is mucked out with a scooptram into an internal orepass. The mucking distance is kept under 152 m (500 ft) as much as possible. An orepass is located nearby the ramp and a second one which consists in a cribbed raise through the backfill. The cribbed orepass is located in the footwall. Every lift, the stope is enlarged to access the raise. The broken ore is loaded in mine trucks from a chute and then trammed to the main orepass.

EQUIPMENT

  • Scooptrams of 1 yard and 2 yards
  • 16 ton trucks

Secondary Mining Method

Underhand cut-and-fill.
Information

The face is mucked out with a 1-yd to 2-yd scooptram. As much as possible, the mucking distance is kept under 152 m (500 ft). A 3.5-yd scooptram loads the muck into the trucks that brings the ore to the main orepass.

EQUIPMENT

  • Scooptrams of 1 yd, 1.5 yd, 2 yd, and 3.5 yd.
  • 16 tons trucks.

Homestake Mining Co - Homestake Mine (U.S.A)

Primary Mining Method

Mechanized Cut-and-Fill.
Information

Every breast is mucked out after the blast. The ore is taken with a scooptram to an internal orepass. From there, a locomotive with mine cars brings the ore to the shaft.

EQUIPMENT

  • Tamrock-Secoma electric-hydraulic single boom Jumbo. The boom is not paramatic (parallel holding), but it does not seem to reduce productivity.
  • Tamrock-Secoma electric-hydraulic bolter.
  • Elphinstone 3.5-yard Load-Haul-Dump (air-conditioned cabin).
  • Locomotive with 10 tons motor or 5 tons motor.
  • Mine cars: 5 tons.
  • The haulage is usually achieved with 8 to 10 mine cars per locomotive.
Rail size: 27.2 kg (60 lb).
Track gauge: 75 cm (30 in).

Secondary Mining Method

Longhole open stoping.
Information

The muck is hauled from the stope to an orepass with a scooptram. Most of the mucking is done with remote control equipment. The ore is loaded into mine cars on the main haulage level, and is transported to the main orepass and hoisted to surface.

EQUIPMENT
3.5-yd Elphinstone scooptram.

Homestake Mining Co. - Darlot Mine (Australia)

Primary Mining Method

Sub-level long-hole retreat with backfill.
Information

The stopes are mucked out by a remote control or tele-operated scooptram. The ore is then brought to a muck bay to be loaded in a truck and transported to the surface.

EQUIPMENT

  • Loaders: Elphinstone 1700 (10-12 t) and Elphinstone 2900 (15 t).
  • Trucks: Elphinstone 69D (30 t) and Elphinstone 73D (50 t).

WMC Resources Ltd - Leinster Nickel Operations (Australia)

Primary Mining Method

Longhole modified Avoca.
Information

Mucking of the ore is done with a scooptram, immediately after the blast of a row. For this reason, the majority of the mucking is done remotely. The ore is brought from the stope to an orepass located in the access drift. To limit dilution caused by mucking on rock fill, a line is painted on the walls. This method is simple and gives the operator a reference point. The general rule used to evaluate mucking productivity is 80 tons/hour for remote control and 120 tons/hour for direct mucking.

EQUIPMENT
Elphinstone 1700 scooptram.

WMC Resources Ltd - Miitel Mine (Australia)

Primary Mining Method

Modified Avoca.
Information

The stope mucking is done by a remote controlled scooptram. The broken rock is brought to the muck bay located in the access where a scooptram of higher capacity loads the trucks. An additional dilution of 5% is added for the hauling of fill floor. When the blasting of first rows is done against the backfill of the previous stope, a 40% dilution is added for the first row and 20% for the second row.

EQUIPMENT

  • 3-yard scooptram
  • 40 t trucks

WMC Resources Ltd - Wannaway mine (Australia)

Primary Mining Method

Mechanized cut-and-fill stoping.
Information

Following each blast, all the broken ore is mucked out to the stope access stockpile. All ore will be hauled up the decline to the existing Wannaway surface ore pad. Where possible, any waste rock encountered through development will be trucked to a stockpile to be used as backfill in the stopes. Grade lines are painted on the walls to guide the LHD operator to prevent mucking of the waste fill rock beneath the broken ore.

EQUIPMENT

  • 3-yard scooptram in stope
  • 7-yard scooptram to load trucks
  • 40 t trucks
